100: A Boutique Not a Sale Rack: The Seasonal Leadership Wardrobe Reset

One hundred episodes. Sonya marks it by going back to the thing this all started with, which is a weekend spent in front of her own wardrobe.

This is the seasonal reset she runs at least twice a year and asks her clients to run too. Heading into spring, she takes it back to three jobs: organise what is already there, put the knitwear away, and take a clear look at what is left. She works the whole thing through on air, including the part most people skip, which is deciding what to replace and being specific enough that the decision is already made by the time the thing turns up in a store.

Then the season ahead. Spring/summer colour, what is landing in Australian stores now, and why she watches the runway without buying from it. If you have a wardrobe full of perfectly nice things that somehow never quite come together, this is the weekend that sorts it.

Key takeaways

  1. Twice a year is the real minimum. Quarterly is better and almost nobody does it. Book it in, and it gets faster every year, with less coming out each round.
  2. Organisation on its own is a reset. Moving where things sit changes how the wardrobe reads before a single item leaves it.
  3. What Sonya changed this season: knitwear folded and colour-coordinated onto shelves rather than hanging, shirts grouped together, tops together, pants and skirts in categories, dresses moved to one side, suits brought together. Same hangers, all facing the same way.
  4. The standard is a boutique, not a sale rack. Her words: when it reads that way, "it always feels like you're going in and picking something new."
  5. Repairs and replacements get their own pass. Stained, worn, needs mending, each into its own pile, dealt with separately from the sorting.
  6. The replacement list is specific and short. Sonya wants two T-shirts. She has written down the colour and the shape, so she will recognise them on sight and can wait for the right ones. No shopping trip.
  7. A settled colour palette does most of the work. When the palette already holds together, the pieces already mix, and the whole audit takes a fraction of the time.
  8. Trends are for reading, not buying. Three questions before anything comes home: will I get longevity out of this, do I like it, would I wear it.

What Sonya is seeing for spring/summer

Colour: blush pink everywhere, right through to activewear, where a few seasons ago it was the hot Barbie pink. Chocolate brown is not going anywhere. Neutrals hold, with a deeper aubergine now reading as a neutral base. Acacia as the accent.

Shape: the statement midi skirt with more texture in it, relaxed suiting, collarless blazers, plenty happening at the neckline, which works hard on video. Tonal dressing continues, so co-ords stay. Lace and sheer for texture, and fringing is still around.

Accessories: statement jewellery is back after several seasons of fine chains. Bigger neck pieces, and earrings and brooches still strong.
