The Quiet Power of Presence: Redefining How We Lead Through Life’s Chaos

Have you ever been in a season where just showing up felt like the win?

Not the “own the room” kind of presence, but the quiet, grounded kind—the one that holds steady even when everything around you is falling apart. It’s not often talked about in leadership books, but it’s real. And it’s powerful.

Over the past year, I experienced this kind of presence firsthand. After months of vague symptoms, my husband was diagnosed with AML, a type of blood cancer. What followed was a whirlwind: hospitals, caretaking, business, kids, decisions, and emotions. I worked beside his hospital bed. I coached clients between lab results. I wasn’t polished. But I showed up.

And that’s when I realized—this is presence, too.

What Presence Really Means in Difficult Seasons

Leadership often tells us to project confidence, polish, and power. But sometimes, the strongest kind of presence isn’t loud or composed. It’s quiet. It’s choosing to keep showing up even when your world feels undone.

During that time, presence meant:

  • Reaching for clothes that brought calm, not attention.

  • Simplifying my energy, my calendar, and my expectations.

  • Showing up for my family with the strength I barely had for myself.

I didn’t need to “own the room.” I just needed to be in it.

Three Anchors for Leading Through Transition

If you’re in a season of grief, burnout, caregiving, or transition—here are three reminders:

1. Simplify to Focus on What Matters

Strip back the noise. Your calendar doesn’t need to be full. Neither does your closet. Let your energy go where it’s most needed—your people, your purpose, your healing.

2. Choose Clothing That Grounds You

Forget what looks impressive. Reach for what feels supportive. Comfort, ease, warmth—those are style choices, too. Especially when you’re carrying an invisible load.

3. Presence is Still Leadership

Even if you’re wearing the same outfit three days in a row, even if your voice trembles—your presence builds trust, invites connection, and models resilience.

You Don’t Need to Trade Authenticity for Credibility

Let me be clear: You can be seen without pretending. You can lead without being perfect. You don’t need to wear a mask to earn your seat at the table.

In fact, your quiet presence might be exactly what someone else needs to feel seen, too.

Final Thought: You’re Not Behind—You’re Becoming

If you’re in that in-between space—navigating something personal while holding space for others—you are not falling behind. You’re evolving.

Presence isn’t always about power. Sometimes, it’s about softness, endurance, and grace. And that kind of leadership? It matters more than we know.
