We Spent Five Weeks Together Before We Walked Into a Store
You stand in front of your wardrobe and think "I have nothing to wear." Not because the wardrobe is empty. Because nothing in it feels like you anymore.
That sentence carries more weight than most people realise. "I have nothing to wear" usually means "I've changed, but I don't know how to dress for this version of me." The options are there. The clarity isn't.
I had a VIP Experience day in the Sydney CBD recently with two private clients. Leaders in their field, established and respected. And by the time we walked into a single store, we'd already spent five weeks together. Five weeks of strategy, coaching, leadership identity mapping, visual brand work, mood boards, and a capsule structure defined and validated. No shopping. No outfit planning. Just the deep work of getting clear on who these women are right now and how they want to be experienced.
By the time we touched a garment, we knew exactly what we were looking for. The shopping was the final step in a process that started with something much more fundamental.
Without that foundation, you default. You go back to what feels safe. You wear pieces that fit but don't speak. You walk into meetings feeling slightly off, not because the outfit is wrong in any technical sense, but because it no longer reflects who you are or where you're heading.
Shopping without identity work is like redecorating a house you're about to move out of. The effort doesn't serve where you're actually going.
The work isn't in the wardrobe. The work is upstream. And the wardrobe becomes easy once that upstream work is done.
