Why Your Wardrobe Stops Working When Your Body Changes
You got dressed this morning and something wasn't right. The clothes were fine on the rack, fine in theory. But on this body, today, nothing landed the way it should. You put something back, tried something else, arrived at a compromise that will do. And you left the house already carrying a small amount of something that wasn't quite right.
If your body has changed and your wardrobe hasn't caught up, this is where that experience comes from. Not from having the wrong clothes, exactly. From having clothes built for a different body shape, a different season, a version of you that has since moved on.
Bodies change. Weight fluctuates. Post-pregnancy bodies are different bodies. Menopause brings its own shifts. What doesn't automatically change is the wardrobe. And when the wardrobe doesn't catch up, the distance between the two has to be managed every single morning. That management is not invisible. It costs something before the day has properly started, before the first meeting, before any of the actual work.
This is the pattern I see in the leadership rooms I work in: the cognitive load of an unresolved wardrobe question sits quietly in the background and draws from the energy you needed somewhere else. The fix is not about the body you're working toward. It is about the body you are in today.
The full piece on how fit (not size) becomes the standard, how to identify what you want to dress toward, and why closing this particular distance matters for women in leadership is on Substack this week.
